The Federal Government yesterday said a manhunt had been launched for the four prison inmates who escaped from the Ahoda Prison, Port Harcourt on Saturday, following a violent jailbreak.
The minister of interior, Comrade Patrick Moro who stated this in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. George Udoh, advised community members not to confront the escapees themselves but report them to security operatives who are already on their trail, as they were considered dangerous, adding also that the circumstances leading to the escape were being investigated.
The statement also revealed that six prisoners who were critically injured while being prevented by the security officers from escaping from the prison were taken to the hospital and they are now backed in the prison. He added that only four prisoners escaped during the attack.
LEADERSHIP also learnt that the prisoners who went on rampage broke the office of the Chief Wader and carted away vital documents and also burnt some. They also vandalised the prison’s clinic and also pull down wall of the prison.
It was gathered that the prison inmates went on rampage at about 5pm on Saturday and vandalised the Office of the Chief Warden.
The irate inmates also set ablaze vital documents in the prison and broke down the Close-Circuit Camera used in monitoring them.
LEADERSHIP learnt that the six inmates were injured when they attempted to pull down the wall of the prison in order to escape.
Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro, who confirmed the development said the situation had been brought under control.
He assured that investigation would immediately be carried to unravel the cause of the violence, stressing that security agencies were already on the trail of the fleeing inmates.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro has commiserated with the victims of the Kaduna bomb blast.
While condemning the activities of the violent group, he reiterated call on Nigerians to join hands with the government in tackling the menace of wanton killings in the country.
